The book is organized in five parts. Part I provides the historical context of sensor technology development and reviews the principles for the design of sensing devices and circuits as well as other important aspects. Part II reviews the most common chemical and biological sensor types with particular focus on their design and the materials used. There is also emphasis on the unique properties and performance requirements for each sensor type and how this can be obtained through modification of the materials and device design. Nanosensor fabrication techniques are reviewed for each sensor type including defining critical parameters, modelling and simulation strategies, and device characterization methods. Part III discusses the most important materials categories used for sensing applications such as nanomaterials, quantum dots, magnetic materials and more. Part IV reviews the most common sensor platforms with a focus on platforms that would enable new form factors. Finally, Part V discusses the future research directions of the development of sensor technologies including challenges and opportunities.
