Book Description

Taking a career break is a conflicted and risky decision for high-achieving professional women. Yet many do so, usually planning, even as they quit, to return to work eventually. But can they? And if so, how? In Opting Back In, Pamela Stone and Meg Lovejoy revisit women first interviewed a decade earlier in Stone's book Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home to answer these questions. In frank and intimate accounts, women lay bare the dilemmas they face upon reentry. Most succeed but not by returning to their former high-paying, still family-inhospitable jobs. Instead, women strike out in new directions, finding personally gratifying but lower-paid jobs in the gig economy or predominantly female nonprofit sector. Opting Back In uncovers a paradox of privilege by which the very women best positioned to achieve leadership and close gender gaps use strategies to resume their careers that inadvertently reinforce gender inequality. The authors advocate gender equitable policies that will allow women--and all parents--to combine the intense demands of work and family life in the twenty-first century.

Author Bio

Pamela Stone is Professor of Sociology at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She has contributed articles to numerous books and refereed journals including American Sociological Review, Gender & Society, and Teaching Sociology, on such topics as gender inequality in employment, occupational classification and measurement, job segregation, pay equity, and the work-family interface as well as lectured, consulted, and provided expert testimony about these issues.

Her research has been supported by a variety of funders including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Sloan Foundation. Former chair of the Department of Sociology at Hunter, Stone was the recipient of a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University, where she also served as Associate Director of the Radcliffe Public Policy Institute. Recently, she spent a sabbatical semester as a Visiting Scholar at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University

Her book,Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home
(University of California Press, May 2007), which Business Week called "provocative, superbly researched, and required reading," has been featured on NBC's "Today" and "Weekend Today," "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric," and "ABC World News Tonight," among other TV and radio appearances, and she has been widely quoted in such publications as The New York Times, Time, and USA Today. Opting Out? was a winner of the American Sociological Association's 2009 William S. Goode Award for the best book on the family.

With Meg Lovejoy, she is the author of the forthcoming (Fall, 2019) Opting Back In:  What Really Happens When Mothers Go Back to Work, which follows the lives of the women interviewed for Opting Out? Advance praise labels it "a critical book on a crucial subject" and "a must read."

An honors graduate of Duke University, Stone received her PhD from Johns Hopkins University.
